Last weekend, the boys and I headed to Aylesford for a day at the zoo. This is a relatively cheap day with even their canteen food being reasonably priced. The cost per adult is $7.50 and children ages 3 to 12 are $3.00.
There is a wide variety of animals at this zoo including many different kinds of monkeys, lemurs, zebras, a zonkey, camels, lions, tigers, and bears, and well…you get the point. Many exotic animals as well as our own domestic animals. The llamas and turtles were feeling a bit…er…randy that day but luckily the kids took no notice. We toured the entire zoo with a stop at the small playground mid way through and finished our day with burgers, fries, and onion rings with an ice cream cone for dessert. On the way out, you must go back through the gift shop and in the upstairs of the gift shop are the reptiles. This is not for the faint at heart. The turtles are cute, I’ll give them that, and I can handle the lizards. The giant snakes, however, are not my cup of tea and I stayed back while the boys admired them.
All in all, a trip to the Oaklawn Farm Zoo (http://oaklawnfarmzoo.ca/) is a nice family day. Reasonably priced and only approx and hour & 15 minutes from HRM, you can’t go wrong. I recommend bringing quarters for the corn dispensers so you can feed the deer and the goats. Also, bring hand sanitizer as the deer & goats tend to slobber all over your hands and sanitizer is not readily available throughout the zoo.
